why should you care?
Alzheimer’s Disease is a progressive neurologic disease that destroys memory and other important mental functions. More than 6 million Americans suffer from Alzheimer’s; by 2050 more than 13 million are expected to be affected. After the age of 45, 1 in 5 women and 1 in 10 men are at risk for developing Alzheimer's. Even if you do not develop Alzheimer’s those you love may, and over 11 million Americans provide unpaid care and these unpaid caregivers provide an estimated 18 billion hours of care.
what can you do?
Alzheimer’s disease is characterized by the presence of amyloid plaques. Amyloid plaques are a naturally occurring protein, however, they appear to clump and are produced in excess amounts that disrupt cell function in Alzheimer’s patients. How do we know this? Because in 1984 researchers found that a gene is linked to a precursor for this protein growth due to the funding they received. Donations made by you will be used by researchers to continue the development of treatments and prevention for Alzheimer’s. Currently, Alzheimer’s research is taking several approaches to prevent and slow Alzheimer’s Disease progression and your contributions can help!
